Dr. Lance Skinkys, DDS

Special Needs Dentistry

It requires compassion and understanding to work with patients who have special needs or pre-existing medical conditions.

During his schooling, Dr. Skinkys completed a residency training at Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital, where he had the opportunity to treat special needs patients and medically compromised patients.

Dr. Skinkys is completely comfortable with differently-abled patients or those with ongoing medical conditions. Our building, state-of-the-art office, and exam rooms are ADA compliant to easily accommodate disabled patients

Who Are Special Needs Patients?

Special needs patients do not necessarily have severe physical or mental challenges. Their unique needs may be the result of a disability or impairment, or they may be related to a part of their overall physical health that impacts their oral health.

Anyone who requires a different approach to dental care may be considered a special needs patient. Dr. Skinkys prides himself on being able to compassionately care for these patients with purposeful appointments that provide results.

We are trained to provide specialized treatment for many medically compromised patients. Here are a few examples of the type of situations we can address:

Special Needs Children

Starting from birth, special needs often affect a child’s dental health. Children with special needs are often at increased risk for developing oral diseases. It is important to find a professional who specializes in understanding your child's specific oral and dental needs early to help them maintain optimal oral health.

We will evaluate your child's risk for dental disease, which we will use to create a treatment plan that addresses your child's specific needs. Our preventive approach includes recommendations for brushing, flossing, and dietary habits. Dr. Skinkys will provide you with all the information you need to help you effectively manage your child’s oral health care.

Our team has the special skill and training necessary to work with children who may not understand what is happening around them. We encourage you to share with us any techniques that you find effective for helping your special needs child to remain calm and receptive.

Cancer Patients

We have years of experience and training in handling the unique dental needs of our patients who are battling cancer. Cancer treatment often requires the involvement of various healthcare providers, and we will coordinate with your doctors to make sure that we’re providing the exact dental care you need.

Diabetic patients are at greater risk for periodontal disease because they are more likely to develop bacterial infections. This goes both ways, because advanced periodontal disease makes it a challenge to control glucose levels, which in turn contributes to the progression of diabetes.

These are just a few of the areas that we can address – please contact us for information about your specific needs.
